Introducing ‘The One Simple Flash Workshop’- 5 + 6 Oct 2010

***Update 17 Sept: The workshop is unfortunately now fully booked – Hit register at the bottom to be notified in case a spot becomes available or of any future workshops.

I’m very excited to introduce my next workshop! It’s called The One Simple Flash Workshop’. It’s a workshop specifically aimed at wedding photography and based on the ‘Strobist’ concept, but with a little twist. Let me explain with some examples…

The photos above all have one thing on common: The subjects were all lit with a little Canon Speedlight (nothing new I know), but, and here’s the twist – No light stand, no light meter and no light modifiers. Just one simple bare flash handheld by my assistant.

When shooting a wedding I like to travel light and don’t want to waste time carrying around bags of stuff, putting up light stands or pitching softboxes.

Pretty simple don’t you think?

Details:

Date:  5 & 6 October 2010
Time: 9am – 5pm
Venue: Allee Bleue Estate

Requirements:
– A clear understanding of the basics of photography like ISO, shutter speed and aperture
- The workshop is not for beginner photographers, but for beginners in terms of ‘off camera flash’

What the workshop is all about:
Although the title indicates one flash I will lightly touch on ‘on camera flash’ as well as multiple light setups, but we’ll concentrate on using one simple flash in various setups and conditions.

On day one we start off with the basics (things like different types of flashes, hardware, light stands, triggers and modifiers). There will be lots of samples, live demo’s and plenty Q&A’s. After lunch I’ll move onto the more technical stuff like camera/flash angles, working with the sun and multiple light setups.

On the morning of day 2 we’ll do some recap from the day before and then move on the more advanced stuff like high speed sync and how to manipulate the ambient light. I’ll do a demo shoot in the early afternoon with a model after which you will get time to play and apply your newly found knowledge. I’ve also arranged for a whole range of demo gear from Cameraworld that I’ll discuss.

By the end of the workshop you will understand off camera flash and be able use your flash quickly and efficiently in a time constrained wedding shoot.

Some of the topics that will be covered:
Triggers – From Pocket Wizards to Poverty Wizards and everything in between.
Different types of speedlights/flashes
Sync speeds
The ‘voice activated light stand’ – aka flash mounted assistant
Ambient vs. flash exposure
Flash brackets, holders and some other thingamajigs that makes life easier

Just a little side note: This is a technical workshop – (there will be no cheat sheets and no spoon feeding). You don’t need an engineering degree but you will be required to have a brain …… and be willing to use it! The concepts are pretty simple and requires very little effort to grasp.

The cost:
R2100 (All KIKI photographers get a 5% discount)
(Coffee/tee and lunch included)

Feel free to give me a shout should you need any further information – Hope to see you there!

Erik - Hi Sybrand

Hope you are well

Know this is a old post/workshop (2010), but it looks really interesting and I was wondering if you are still running this or any other courses you might be running in the Cape town area.

Warm Regardsd
Erik
